REFLECTIONS takes me back to one November night as I was waiting in the rain at a red stop light in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The scene before me was a reflection of lights—the green lights were when mine finally turned green, the red lights of the street ahead, the white sidewalk lights lining the street, the orange ‘Do Not Walk’ light, and a blue light from a store window sign. Diagonal grays define the sidewalks in perspective. The trails of lights on the wet ground became a painting in my mind. In the process of applying the black paint in thick, generous amounts, I created the horizontal texture—allowing the colors to remain on top of the ‘peaks’ while the ‘valleys’ remained black. Once at home, I sketched my rainy experience.
